Last September, due to City of Miami budget shortfalls, funding for the historic Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center was dramatically cut. The theater has funding only to remain open through the end of March 2011.

Since September, a new not-for-profit corporation, The Olympia Center, Inc. has stepped forward with a commitment to raise the funds necessary not only to keep the theater open but to ensure its success in the future.

We at Friends of Gusman have been busy as well. Last November, we received a $100,000 Knight Arts Challenge grant from The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to initiate a program to support three to five mid-sized arts organizations in becoming ‘resident’ companies at the Olympia. The result – greater audiences for these Miami arts groups and more nights of programming at the Olympia Theater, which will also translate directly to the bottom line. Everyone wins!

But for this to happen, the theater must remain in operation. Show your support today.

RE: SUPPORT FOR THE GUSMAN CENTER

Dear Mayor Regalado and City of Miami Commissioners:

I write to you today as a very concerned citizen of Miami-Dade County and a proud supporter of the historic Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center. You are aware of the historic significance of the facility, and you know the funding obstacles it has faced each year. I want to thank you for your efforts to transition management of the theater to a new not-for-profit, committed to raise the funds to operate the theater and ensure its success in the future.

The theater is not only a unique venue for the performing arts but also a contributing factor to the success of neighboring shops, restaurants and residents who depend on and support the wonderful community events which take place at the theatre. Additionally, given its rich history, the theater deserves to be an integral part in the revitalization of Downtown Miami. Without it, that revitalization would lose an essential piece of its heart and soul.

Please pledge your support to make a successful transition in management, to keep the theater open this year and beyond, and to assist the new operators in every way possible to succeed. I urge you to make this item a priority for our community.

Thank you for your time. We hope you will not let us down.

Sincerely,
